Recycled Glass Bubble Wall Terrarium

That's right, wall terrarium! There is a small hole at the rear of the glass, anchor your screw into the wall and hang away. No two will be the same, though the general size of the piece is always the same. Because they are hand blown, there is some variation from piece to piece, what does remain the same, other than the song.... is how awesome these are. Pretty decently priced as well. You can find them here at sprouthome.com We think you all will love these. Happy Spring, though it is cloudy and a bit chilly here in Chicago. The ones shown above are two different terrariums, one has succulents planted in it, and the other has raindeer moss, mood moss, orchid bark, two air plants, and a johnny head jr. Rock it!

moss, glass, curly wood and some stones get into a cab together, that is about all we know, that is the last thing the remembered from the night. They just know they ended up in some really nice persons home. They don't seem to mind so much, and that is kind of troubling.

I know I know, you say you never leave a bottle of wine unfinished... well some people do, and I"m on this planet to be of some help to them. Look at me, I"m a handsome resin headed Monkey, and I have a stout little cork body, my body is the perfect shape, wait, I know what you're thinking, and well, I'm not that type of Monkey, I bring up my perfect body because it's absolutely perfect for corking up wine bottles, not because it's some kind of sexy monkey body. Sexy Monkey Body? You are out of line. I have friends that understand me, Horse, Tiger, and Silly Snake. We are a posse of wine stoppers and we live at Sprout Home.

We are very happy to have our Fraser Firs and Balsams back. We have been getting these two types of trees from the same two farms for the last 8 years. The Fraser's come in from North Carolina, and the Balsams come from Nova Scotia. Quality, and many many sizes. 4' up to 14'. We also have very rugged Xmas tree stands, even though we always order more each year, those stands to fly out the door. Lot's of freaked out December 20Th Xmas stand shoppers in the past. If your not down the the trees that are no longer alive, you can start a nice tradition around a Norfolk Pine. Norfolk's are amazing potted indoor evergreens, very Charlie Brown Christmas type trees. We have several little table top guys, and then they jump to around 2.5' and we were lucky to nab a nice 9 footer. Really great indoor plants. They like bright light, and thrive with some help with moisture, an occasional misting will do the trick. Go Season of Giving!

Over the last few days we have received lots of Seasonal Goodies. Balsam and Fraser Xmas trees, 4'-14'. Wreaths from basic to super pimped out, Door Swag..... I mean, come on, we have a type called Big Daddy Door Swag, as well as Pine, Cedar, and Fraser. Garland of Fraser, Balsam, and Pine. We also have some really cool cut branches, you can use them in so many ways, Eucalyptus Pods, Sumac, Dogwood, SnowBerry, Juniper (you can get started on that home style gin). Here are some shots of the above mentioned Seasonal Goodness we have for you. Not pictured, but equally important, Xmas Tree Stands, Removal Bags, and well.. US! Come ring the the season.

Another lively group of people came to our most recent terrarium class last tuesday. Much fun was had, much was learned, and many new terrariums have new life in them. We really enjoy showing people that they can do this. Classes abound at both stores, Brooklyn and Chicago! Anyone can learn about the art of terrarium planting for sure, and we would love to show you how.

We had a nice terrarium workshop last night, pretty fun! It is so great to see everyones different styles, woodsy, clean, packed, simple. And the choices of terrarium critters is always a funny one. A couple mail carrier figurines, a couple dogs, a rabbit. Love it! Everyone left with a new addition for their homes, and we like that.

So, there is something for everyone right? What is your animal choice? Really, what are you into having piled around your spot? There are the elephant people, the rooster folk, pig people, monkey people, rabbits.. yeah, horses... yeah, how many of you dig the funky white space tiger? And another thing, why is it when people are into otters, they have a bunch of freaky sea otter trinkets? The river otter is a way more majestic critter don't you think? Maybe it was that trip to Monterey in the 90's... Bears! Now that would be a pretty under represented animal in the collector world, how about pidgeons? You know, they all rock!

I love the way you have a common name that would fit right into the world of the world of ultimate fighting or wrestling of some kind. And in this corner, wearing no trunks, we have BLACK MISTIC!!!!! I know I know you are also called Earth Star and Starfish Plant, but I thinkg Black Mistic is the jam. I think your a damn cute, would you like to maybe go see a movie? I'm thinking Inception might be good, though it might be a bit "hollywood" for your tastes. I have seen you a couple times at the Siskel theater, so I know your a high art kind of plant. You and I would go so well together, you like a nice sunny location, I like a nice sunny location. You don't like to go all the way dry or remain too moist, and well... that is about how I like things concerning water as well. Your crazy adaptive to different temperatures, and well... Me too! I mean, 60-80degrees sound lovely. I am a little concerned about the jagged razor like edges to your leaves, this does ensure that I handle you with care. You even give off little "pups" when your doing your part to repopulate. I mean all we have to do is just trim off the pup once it's about a third of your size, and boom, new plant. So yeah, your cute and you know it, but do you know that your horizontal stripes are just damn sexy as well? They are! I will even mist you, you like that right? Just let me know. It has been a while since we have been able to get these back at Sprout Home. Come and get em' while the gettin's good. Each bird house and bird feeder is a one of a kind. The cigar boxes have been treated, so your all good to go in all weather. Depending on where you live, it's about time for some species to start looking for winter homes (they start house hunting early), or be ready for next springs new comers. Either way, we are really into these.

Our next Terrarium Building Workshop will be on Wednesday October 20th, at 6pm. Contact the store to be put on the sign up sheet, and for any information. The classes have been filling up pretty fast. (Septembers class is full)

Our next Floral Design Class will be based on the theme Uncommon Structures, and will take place Tuesday September 14th at 6pm.

The next Floral Class after that will be October 12th, a tuesday again. The theme will be Long Lasting Pieces.

Last night TJ Harrison hosted a basic arrangement floral class. It was attended by floral enthusiasts of all skill levels and was overall a lot of fun. TJ explained beginning arrangement with a Sprout Home twist giving students a foundation to build off of. Everyone made beautiful arrangements and we can't wait to see what happens at the next class on Uncommon Structures, September 14th at 6pm.

Sansevieria Cylindrica, your so damn hot. I first saw you at a party down in Pilsen, you clearly stood out. There were so many out of place hipsters down there, the resentment of the people who have lived down there for years was evident, but you even charmed them. I still don't know how you got all those free tamales from that little store for free. I'm thinking your that charming. I know I would have given you anything you asked for, even though you don't need much. My friend Leo told me that you get by with the smallest amount of care, very little water, and very little light. Though at the party you told me you can grow faster in brighter light. Who doesn't want to grow faster? I love the fact that you can get up to 7' tall, I like a tall plant. But I realize that your height, much like our potential love, is a slow growth kind of thing. I would do anything to get into your life. I know you hang out at Sprout Home, I have seen you there a couple times since meeting you at the party, you don't seem to remember me though, at least you don't speak when I say hello. Who knows maybe you can't talk, being a plant and all. I hear that you have the potential to be shaped, even braided, that is crazy to me, I like the way you simply reach for the sky, it's so motivational to me. Leo also told me you have a drinking problem, and that is why you only drink like twice a month or so. Maybe you should just drink nice clean water, rye and plants seems a bit much. I hope you get this letter, i'm just going to send it to Sprout, since I see you through the window there so much, don't panic, I have to pass Sprout Home to get to the 66 bus, to get to my job.... i'm not a stalker. At least I hope you don't think so after reading this letter. I really think you would like it at my house, I have an end table that is just dying to meet you. And don't worry, I think your nick name African Spear is pretty cool. I mean you are from there. I think it's cool how you got your name, a competition in a Dutch newspaper in 1837. Weirdly cool.

We thought we would get the process going, you know... for those with plant watering issues. We know your out there, and we love you just the same. We want you to benefit from the goodness of plants, the air, the visual exploration, the removing of toxins from your air, and the wonder of watching something grow. The Maxi-Cube Planters by Lechuza are one of the more effective self watering systems out there. Wick Wick Wick, this is the trick. Come pick one out, already potted up for you.

September Terrarium Class Wednesday Sept 22 6pm

Our next class will be Wednesday September, at 6pm. We'll demonstrate the steps for building an open terrarium, including planting mediums, plants that work together, and maintenance. Participants can bring their own container and purchase the materials (rocks, charcoal, soil, and plants) for a fee or they may purchase a container at the store. If you bring your own container, make sure the opening is wide enough to fit your hand into. Material charges are based on the size of container and plant pricing (estimated charges are $35 - $75). RSVP to info@sprouthome.com space is limited. We had a great time at the last one, check out blogspot to see some great pictures of attendees and their terrariums. The below August class filled up, jump on Septembers class.

Chlorophytum comosum Vittatum, yeah... I know your name. You wrote it down on a napkin at Perogi Fest last weekend, but that number you gave me seems busy all the time. My roomie thinks your just trying to blow me off. Could be. But here is deal, your so special to me, there are so many things I love about you. OK, love is a Strong word, so... like. Yeah, so many things I like about you. Your looks are amazing, you seem to flow out of the top of the planter with such grace and style. And the way you make little babies all the time. Some guys might find that to be a bit much, but I like it. New life if great, and besides, I can give your little ones away to my friends. If that is cool with you. A friend told me, that all I have to do is wait for your little ones to get a few inches long, and to snip them off, set them in water (root knob down) and within a week or so, there will be roots. Then I can just plant your little babies in potting mix, and bam, new plant. But like I said, only if it's cool with you. You look real nice with them flowing off of your main body as well. Your coloration is pretty. Nice and light looking. you even come with stripes, it's like your a race car or something. Your so rugged to, you take abuse well. Nothing mean, just an occasional lack of water. I will do my best to keep you watered about every 5-7 days, I know that depends on where we decide your going to live. Another thing that is amazing about you is your rate production of oxygen, your always in the top 5 for air producing, and air cleaning. And believe me, my air can be pretty toxic from time to time. I'm thinking your going to hang, is that cool? If you want, I could just pot you low, and you can rock it floor plant style. Either way works for me. I just like how low maintenance you are, this is my main reason to love you. So many people diss you, call you a weed, or typical. To that I say, they are so wrong, they just can't see what I see in you. Your the tops. Full sun, to bright indirect light is all you need, some water from time to time, and well... this can be our dream together. Not like that stupid movie inception. Yeah, I don't even mind that your part of the Lilly Family, that doesn't bother me a bit. Being from South and West Africa is cool, adds character for sure. I know about you being sensitive to fluoride, we can work past that. There is one thing that kind of sucks about you. You became the craze during the Victorian period, LAME!

I first met Jacob the Violet Green Swallow on Mud Bay Road in Olympia Washington in the Spring of 1994, Jacob was just starting out with his band, Skinny Jean Killer, (little did we both know back then, that making fun of hipsters was going to be the thing to do in 2010) Jacob was always ahead of the game, sick tabla player as well. We met at Star Lounge cafe yesterday for a follow up interview, though we kind of got stuck on the topic of his two new homes. Here is part of the interview.

Sprout Home Chicago: So Jacob, 6 world tours, 2 stints in rehab, and 4 drummers later, Skinny Jean Killer is still rocking. What brings you to Chicago?

Jacob: Pitchdork

SHC: wow! you guys are doing really, that festival is one of the most progressive indie minded events of the summer here.

Jacob: yeah, it was ok... lots of skinny jeans, so that was kind of awkward for us, being called Skinny Jean Killer and all. We got some flack yelled at us as we were taking the stage.

SHC: Flack, like what?

Jacob: Oh, well this one chick wearing purple high wasted 90's cut shorts and big dumb goonies perscription glasses, yelled out "whats with the name? are you dissing us?"

SHC: Were you?

Jacob: Well, yes. Of course, but we still need these people to support us, you know how the music biz is, luckily we rocked their worlds and I don't think people really thought about us being called Skinny Jean Killer after our first song "I don't care, because it's cool not to care" kicked in.

SHC: Wait, what! Is that song title also a diss to hipsters? That seems kind of messed up, I mean, your already barely getting away with this with your name, and then this song... man that must really make people upset.

Jacob: No no one really ever seems upset, we play dance rock, and that is what is hot right now, you don't really even have to be good these days, I mean half of our songs are 80's covers, we just change the lyrics and flip the beat a little bit. We have songs that if you listen closely, sound like Duran Duran, Gang Of Four, The Cure, Kajagoogoo. It's really funny.

SHC: That is funny, uhm... where do you live these days?

Jacob: I have two homes, they rock. I got them at Sprout Home. I have one that keep in Mansfield Illinois, and the other I have hanging up in Edenbourough PA. I have the log there.

SHC: What is so great about your homes?

Jacob: What is with all questions dude? One is classic A Frame, and the other is shaped like a log, they both have great openings, just big enough for my kind, but not for the annoying Blue Jays, they have fat butts and won't fit. Which works for me and my family, they totally suck! But the Beatles song Blue Jay Way is really great. My houses also have air vents, and a great little secret opening at the bottom for when we need to clean up. I like the words that are printed on the houses also, though I can't read, being a bird and all...

SHC: You know Jacob, your kinda weird. This interview is over, but thanks for the photos of your homes, we will for sure use them in the article.

We had a really fun terrarium building class last night at Sprout Home. Turnout was good, terrariums were potted up, plants found new homes. We love that some people went with the succulent vibe, in addition to the moss, fern types. Erin and Elisabeth did Sprout Home proud, such good teachers. Look at the creations our new friends created.

Palm Grenade goes for a walk....

So much to see and do here at Sprout Home, Today the Grenade went for a little journey around our little Chicago hood. Trying to cross the street took a while, no legs and all. Then over to Chicago and Damen, which way to go? How about some coffee over at Atomix, yummy. Then the Grenade went over to Rotofugi, tried to hang out with Kosik's Bunnys.... they were too tough for Grenade though, finally over to Odges for a nice helping of french fries and a chocolate shake. Needless to say Grenade is now chillin' out in the store. If you need a neato center piece, or just something to start the conversation, the Grenade are your pick. $20 at Sprout Home. If your making a special trip, call first, they should go pretty fast. They are about 9" in diameter and have a super thick stalk. They should last about a month or so.

These will not cost you much, yet they more than do that job. These planters are made from rice husks, corn husks, corn cobs, and all natural coloring agents and bonding agents. Love using the word agents.... These planters are compostable, not that they degrade any time soon. 4-6 years is the life expectancy of the Eco Planter. check them out here if you like.

But really good stuff. Heirloom and Organic for days. We rock Seeds of Change and Baker Creek Heirloom. Don't forget about the 60 hole Bio Dome, a really great way to get lots of seedlings going. No silly... This is our new floral fridge. Were pretty excited to offer cut flowers here in our Chicago store. Individual stems, as well as daily made bouquets. Mikado Forest......Syngonanthus chrysanthus

Syngonanthus chrysanthus, also known as the Mikado Plant. Very Cool, Very hard to find. We have a nice stash of them for sures. This plant will thrive in bright but indirect light, it also loves humid surroundings. It is all about the Flowers with this plant - one creamy-gold, pin-head like flower borne at the tip of each stem. The flowers have a papery look to them. No scent is apparent. Because of its origin as a swamp plant, humidity should be kept high, at around 70% if possible. Keeping the plant in a tall, straight sided glass vase, or a deep bowl, and spraying it regularly with filtered water will help to keep the humidity level up. Water regularly, from the bottom of the pot rather than from above, and don’t allow the compost to dry out. The best place for it would probably be a bright, warm bathroom, unless you can provide its exact requirements elsewhere.

Flowers are cool, but don't sleep on how cool foliage is.
